This would be the "van" that I posted in the other thread....
=========================================

BMW is considering building its planned sports wagon at its US plant in South Carolina, Reuters said, citing German newspaper Die Welt.

Building the model in the United States would help protect the company from foreign exchange fluctuations without the use of expensive financial instruments, the news agency noted, adding that many analysts are forecasting BMW's earnings will drop by hundreds of millions of euros next year due to the continued slide in the US dollar, which fell to a record low against the euro on Friday.

Currently, the company builds the popular X5 offroader and the sleek Z4 roadster cabrio in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the report said.

"A final decision has not yet been reached," a BMW spokesman told Reuters on Friday.

The news agency noted that BMW has repeatedly stated it does not intend to use longer-term currency derivatives at current rates to protect its earnings from foreign exchange movements since it believes the US dollar is significantly undervalued to the euro.

Chief executive Helmut Panke reportedly said in late October that he expects the dollar to strengthen significantly by then end of next year.

He told Reuters in October that a decision would be reached by the end of 2005 over whether to build the sports wagon, which is seen as BMW's answer to the new Mercedes R-Class grand sports tourer.

I'm currently at my parents' house in SC, and there was a story on the local news last night that made me go "Huh?"

The local news (broadcasted from Spartanburg, SC) said that Mercedes was going to be contracting BMW to build the Mercedes R-Class Grand Sports Tourer at the Spartanburg plant. I couldn't believe that, but that's what they said. My dad and I both immediately said, "What?!?!?!?" Do you think the news was wrong?

I could see this as being true and I would fully expect more of these activities to materialize. It's a business to make money and this remains key despite what strong, unwavering consumer sentiment would dictate.

I have read some material about some strong non-US competitors working together as would have never been expected in the past. But do they really have a choice?

has to definately been wrong...unless BMW is gonna mess with the car...i dont think the plant even has the capacity and to build the BMW wagon wouldn't they need to expand the factory?

My mom just told me that it has been announced that in a few months, the plant will be shut down for 2 months or so. They are planning to retool the plant and bring back the capability to build multiple vehicles on the same line (currently, they run one line for the X5 and a different line for the Z4).

I bet they are doing this to increase both the flexibility of the plant and the plant's output capacity so they can build these new vehicles there without adding onto the plant (its already been added onto like 3 times since it was originally built).
