BMW X5 4.4 Vs. Mercedes Ml 55 Amg

Me and my father are looking at a new car in 1-2 months, and we came to the conclusion that, it should be either a 2001 BMW X5 4.4 liter, or the 2001 Mercedes Ml 55 AMG, the pricee range that were looking at is tops 30k. We like both of these cars a lot, but were stuck on which one we should get, I myself am slightly leaning towards the X5 but only if it has sports package. But on the other hand the Ml 55 has a bigger engine, and it already has something like a sports package.
So what is your opinion on what should we buy?

I think I'd go X5 4.4. They are certainly no slouch, and they look a hell of a lot better. Plus, South Carolina is better than Alabama.

interesting, i was just reading this comparo i know you are looking at used, but it's not a bad point of ref.

i don't think its fair to compare the amg to 4.4i, but that may just be me. if you want a fast psudo mini-van get an ml. (i still hate the huge back end of that thing)

I think the exterior modifications they made to the ML55 AMG really help out its looks. The power-dome hood, red brake calipers (on some colors, not all), AMG wheels, AMG body kit, the tail pipes, etc. make the odd-styling mini-van-ness of it go away. I mean, I don't know I guess I am so biased and used to the way the ML looks since we had a 99 ML430 for 3 years and now we're almost done with the 02 ML500, but I really think the ML55 AMG is a great-looking car.
My friend had an 01 ML55 AMG when we were in high school and it was just unbelievably powerful. 0-60 in 6.4 seconds, it was the fastest SUV on the road, and the torque the thing produces is just so crazy. He has an 03 X5 4.4i now and although he loves the X5, today he told me he wishes he still had the old ML55.

The problem with this decision is that you are comparing the "high performance" M-Class to the "middle version" X5....this is like a "BMW pride vs higher performance SUV" question. What makes the decision so easy in my mind, is that they both cost around the same price, and I've passed on BMW once before and I can definitely do it again. Shit, ban my ass !!

The thing about the 4.6 is that it costs 46k 0_o which is wild because the ml 55 costs 30k. New it costs like 65, while the 4.6 around the same. BMW just keeps its price. From what i have read, they are pretty well matched the 4.4 liter is like .5 secs slower..

That's the older design ML. U G L Y !!! Inside and out. Get the BMW. I'm not a big fan of the X5 b/c it's so space inefficient, but the first ML was not styled very well. Comfort to me sucked too, but that can be an individual thing.

01 X5 4.4i does 0-60 around 7.5-7.6 seconds. The ML55 does 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. The 04 X5 4.4i does 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, but that's due to a 315hp V8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission (whereas the 01 models have 282hp and 5-speed auto).

Basically comes down to your own preference, the ML however is more off-road capable than the X5
