I own a 2000 BMW323 and find the brakes produce a high pitched squealing sound when I stop. It does not happen all the time and occurs just before I stop. The local dealer tells me the brakes are fine (I have 18,000 miles on the car) and the sound is produced because BMW had to eliminate asbestos from the brake linings. In traffic it can become a real pain, and I don't hear this coming from other cars. Anyone else have this problem?

The dealer is talking $hi+. I assume it is the sales rep? No conciencious Service Advisor would tell you that. Asbestos was outlawed in brake linings years ago.

This is due to vibration between the pads and caliper surfaces. Are they the original brakes? Sounds like it with 18K miles. The fix is to use an anti-squeal lub on the pad and caliper surfaces. The squeal causes no harm, just annoying.
