hi, I'm a newb, and I really can use some help from owners, especially those in So. Cal area...

I'm buying a '05 330ci with performance package and xenon lights, how much will I expect to pay in So. Cal area??

My friend said to use the window sticker price as the "out the door" price is a good starting point, can you guys recommend good dealers that are willing to deal??

thanks and any tips welcomed....

I've always buy from invoice. You can check edmunds.com or carprices.com to see what the invoice price is and how much people are paying in your area. It's very common for people to pay up to $1000 over invoice.

No one who likes to save money uses the MSRP as a starting point. That's what the dealers want you to use.

I use www.carsdirect.com to give me an idea of a decent price. You use that price and work down from there. Or, if you're a member of different orgs (like Costco, AAA roadside service, etc.), see if they have their own fleet pricing. Then, try and get a dealer to beat that price. Prices from the sources I just listed usually come from teh internet/fleet manager. Try and get a salesperson (even from teh same dealership) to beat those prices.

thanks for all the replies guys...

I guess I didn't make myself clear, when I said to use window sticker price as the starting point, I mean using it as the "out the door" price, meaning that's what I pay in order to drive the car off the lot.

Ahh, that's an ok starting point. But, you need to know the invoice to know if you're getting a good deal or not. The difference btw MSRP and Invoice is different in eery model. Plus, some areas give much greater deals than others, so getting the sticker price as your out the door may be a great deal in one state, but not so great in another. Perfect example is teh E-class. In NY, they're not discounted much. In CA, they're heavily discounted. So, your local going rate is important to know.

As long as the exact model you want is on the lot, it should be no problem buying the car for invoice. I have bought a lot of cars for family and friends over the years and never pay above invoice. Usually, I make them sell it for invoice out the door. It really depends on how much taxes are going to be. A good way to get a really low rate is to buy the extended warranty and then cancel it as soon as your loan is in place. You just have to pay attention to how that return of the warranty price affects your loan ie.. does it go toward principal or not.

Nick Alexander (wherehouse district in LA) advertises some good deals. Shelly (Buena Park) is on the pricy side, it's sister dealership Irvine prolly is too. Avoid McKenna at all costs (Norwalk). Savage (Ontario area) is an avoid too. Long Beach has great service, no idea about sales tho. I've heard some people have gotten decent deals at New Century (Alhambra).

You can search www.dealerrater.com to see what others have posted.
