how many of you would be interested in an oem-looking sub-box for an e39 to add your own speaker to? what about an e46?

the idea is that it would fit above the battery and replace the existing trunk trim piece. it would support up to a 10" woofer.

would you be interested in both left and right-side models?

what if it were to be avialable in a say 2 months?

i am working on something for the e39's initially. if you would be interested, please send an email indicating the following:

e39 or e46
right or left+right

i will put you on a mailing list. i will let you know in a week or so if this will really happen.

update: e39 oem-style subbox @90%

hopfully you guys haven't gone to sleep on me.

i am about 90% done with the 1st prototype for the e39. i will be working to source the carpet in the comming weeks.

note, the prototype has a fiberglass trim piece, however the final product will be trimmed with high-strenght plastic.

i have it outfited with a JL10w6v2 at 2 ohms powered by 1 channel of a PPI A600. it cranks!!!! - it is however important to note you have to have a good vent to the cabin. from what i can tell there are 2 good choices:

  • factory Nokia sub vent holes in the deck
  • ski passthrough with the door open - trim flap can stay up

more pix of the box and my amprack, here: subbox progress

if you are intrested in one, let me know either here or by email: subbox@theUnder.com

thx

I would love to see one on E46. However, I personally won't mind of power too much as long as it is enough for the woofer. On another hand, I would rather worries about the wiring technique on this thing. Also, any idea of how much this kinda box would be??

Thanks!!

thx for the intrest, indeed.

i will be looking toward the e46 once i get the e39 in production.

it will probably be around 200-250USD.

if you send an email to subbox@theunder.com, i will put you on the update list.

thx

basicly the a speaker box with an oem-style trim piece attached and speaker terminals installed.

as for wiring.. theres stuff all over the forums referring to the pin-outs for the BMW systems. its different for the e39's and e46's. also depends on what level system you have in each car.

Subwoofer: If you can live with just 1 cubic foot

Nice looking set-up. But for those of us who are less particular about the location of the sub, an alternative to the custom (in the battery compartment) solution is the Infinity BassLink. I've put one in my 740 and some of my buds have followed suit. The Bass comes through very cleanly through the deck speakers (in phase of course) or through the ski-hole (for those without the Premium Audio option). The 200 watt version has *plenty* of bass-response drive and even headroom for the occasional punch.

The Infinity guys have done the right thing with the Servo-controlled speaker (so it does not overdrive) and IMHO this upgrade is by far the biggest bang for the buck (BassLink on eBay for ~$200 plus the BassLink Install Kit for BMW at ~$40, also on eBay). The whole deal installs in about an hour. Plus, if you get the Install Kit with the QuickRelease option, you can remove/replace the BassLink (like autocross tech's might ask you to do) in like 30 seconds flat.

Awesome upgrade for the $$ and really focusses the $$ on the weak spots of the BMW stock audio.

thx for the compliment

true the basslink is an alternative but the whole idea here is an unobtrusive oem-like product thats flexible to support any 10"speaker/amp combo you might fancy.
