please help me oh Lord, all I'm looking for is an E34 M5 3.8 ltr 1995 black on black LHD in perfect condition with low mileage! Am I setting my sights too high? Plus I live in Spain and the general concensus here is to NOT look after your car....any specialist contacts/agencies/websites would be gratefully welcome....

I don't think you'll find a whole lot here - most the members are in the US and we got the crappy 3.6 liter motor that year :-(
You could hardly call that masterpiece of an engine 'crappy'.

Yeah England is a good bet but they put salt on their roads in the winter and that'll kill any car, so I'd probably avoid that...

C'mon you've got to be joking... Are you being sarcastic? [scratch]

Any variation of the S38 engine is superb. [headbang]
Nope 3.6l has many problems, especially with carbon buildup and etc. It doesn't have anywhere near the potential of the 3.8 (which the US got after 92? 93? I forget)

You would know this if you lived over here... EVERYTHING changed by BMW to meet dot specifications SUCKS (many of which haven't been updated since the 50's...like headlight specs).

Think about it.. e28/e30 bumpers, the US ellipsoid headlights (which totally suck compared to what the european cars got), the e28 535i motor which got 190 hp instead of the european m30 that got 208hp (e34 535i got the european e28 version basically)... etc.

Ok but he said in the beginning of the thread:
all I'm looking for is an E34 M5 3.8 ltr 1995
Than you said:
most the members are in the US and we got the crappy 3.6 liter motor that year :-(
Than you said:

So I was confused by what you said, because he said he was looking for a "95", you said the US got the 3.6 that year, than you said, "which the US got after 92? 93? I forget", huh? [8] Ok so we are now on the same sheet of music?

The 3.8 liter cars were never officially imported to the US as US models, and no US E34 M5s were made after the 1993 model year.

3.8 liter cars have been imported to the US, but they are not US-spec M5s. They have to be federalized.

As I understand it, the S38B36 is a well-engineered engine. It incorporates a lot of design improvements over its predecessor.

Can you be more specific about the 'many problems'? Do you have a source for the 'carbon buildup' problem?

This is what I thought. It started from a good base (the S38B35 for the US and the M88/3 in Europe) in the E28 M5 and the E24 M635csi/M6...

It's a fantastic engine. Plenty of torque but loves to rev too
