The Berlin police is rough to the BMW 5 series based patrol car. They lost 22 and are still callous. They "claimed" that the VW were not fast enough and switched to BMW! They probably did not tell the truth, but the fact said it all.

I hopeing that they are the 545i's or they wont be able to catch anything...
Are you crazy.............most are 520's and 525's and believe me, they are plenty fast. You can only go so far fast on the autobahn, not like the states where you can lead police on high speed chases for hours on end. In my experience, you can only drive "really fast" for very short spurts until you run into other traffic. Don't forget Germany is the size of Oragon with 84 million people, that is ALOT of freaking cars. And ALOT of freakin traffic.

Hey Tool Fan! Actually, Deutschland is the exact size of Montana, almost to the tee. You are totally right...everyone thinks you can enter the Autobahn in Berlin and drive 200 km an hour all the way until Munich :) Good Luck. You'll be lucky if you can drive fast for 15/20 mins until you hit a lovely Verkehrsstau.

And Bavaria has been using BMW for years, where most other Bundesländer still employ Mercedes. In the good ol' days (until the late 1990s)...Mercedes was the #1 choice for almost all Emergency vehicles, fleets and taxis. As MBZ lost reliability, BMW and other manufacturers gained popularity.

it's weird tho to see a middle of the line cars for police duty. i mean chevys used to be modded ot death to be fast and strong. the police running a 530i would be like giving the cops a V6 cameros for police duty.

but it is prolly different for european countries, where everything is more densly packed. vs the states, where most of the highways are wide open roads where you need a high hp, fast patrol car.

I think you could effectively use a 530 as a patrol car here in the US, infact I pretty sure it would outperform any other patrol car on the road, its funny they have to modify to death to be fast and strong, doesn't same much for the car or the brand.

Just got back from Europe last week. It's interesting to see the different cars that different countries use for police work. VW Jetta wagons seem to be a popular choice in many places. Bavaria does use 3 series BMWs. Switzerland uses Subaru Legacy wagons. In fact there are tons of Subarus all over Switz. Italy uses Alfa Romeos and Fiats. There are lots of cops in Italy but they don't seems to care one iota about how people drive because they drive like mad in Italy. I don't remember what they use in France because I hardly ever saw a cop. Probably Renaults or Peugeots.

It's correct about about speeding on the autobahn. There tends to be a lot of traffic and construction going on everywhere. And the trucks wallow in the right lane going 100 kph (60mph) tying things up even more.

I was on a motorcycle and it was VERY cool how I could split lanes and cut through stalled traffic. People will even move their cars over to make room when they see you coming from the back. It's perfectly legal and acceptable.

Yeah Pete is right....it is just "'''road courtesy" to move out of the way of the faster vehicle if possible...but Trucks, trucks, trucks......i have never had road rage until I see a LKW(what germans call semis) in the left lane going 100kmh on a unlimited speed section of the autobahn and causing traffic to back up with like 20 cars behind it....and on top of that there would be around 15 LKW's in the right lane going the same speed as him!!!!! Grrrrr....there is ALWAYS road construction in Germany...but it is bittersweet....most of their autobahn roads are very nicely paved....most cops in Baden Wurtemburg use 5er's......most of the time 520i's(the 520i's and 523i in germany are fast enough to catch MOST cars that people drive in Germany).....they dont have to worry about chasing you if you are speeding.....there are cameras for that...AND they have radios......for other things you will not know you are getting pulled over right away because over here they TRY to pull in FRONT of you first and then turn on their lights....its funny because there will be a sign in the back window telling you to "follow"....you might as well do it because they got the license plate before they got in front of you.

That's a neat way to get pulled over... [;)]

Those cars look like 525i's by their rim style and I'm sure that BMW can adjust the engine response and gearing to make the car quicker. Besides the 215hp 525i already does 0-60 in 7.3 seconds (stock and manual). Considering it has 100+ more hp than most of the cars in Germany as stated earlier, thats plenty. If you order that car in bulk it's also cheaper than its 38k european invoice price. I'd bet they sell them to the Polzei either as complimentary (Germany is socialist) or for 25-30k. That number probably gets even lower since we're dealing with Euros.

Also the American police cars are bought in bulk as well I'd bet they get the Crown Vics for 15-20k a piece and they adjust the gearing and engine response to give it an 8 second 0-60 time. America would never use foreign cars in their police force, it's simply bad politics.

that police car is tight as..... anyways those are chill except it would look a whole heck of alot better with a two-tone police paint job. it would be especially cool if they supercharged or turbo charged it the whine of the charger and the whine of the sirens would scare the s outta me to pull over.

Yup, I've seen them in the Bay area also, riding RTs. Saw somebody in a car SOLO in the car pool lane on the approach to the bay bridge. He went thru the toll booth, and Mr. Beamer-cop was sitting on the other side. BUSTED!

Well GM and Ford do not build motorcycles which are fast and heavy, so I think it's safe to assume BMW was the next viable option. They're not going to buy Kawasakis...
