From the aerial shots I see, there is always sharks in the water with surfers. I have been surging for a couple of years and have not see a shark yet... (Knock on wood! [target] )

Dolphin...look at the rear fin. Shark's aren't horizontal.

[werd] Exactly what I was going to say...looks like a dolphin to me. Ironically, this is one of the first pictures that pops up for shark when you search for "shark" in google. I think it's been mislabeled or misidentified, probably to scare people or shock them.

Here's a bigger pic. The dorsal fin looks even mroe dolphin-like here, as does the shape of the head.

Here's a webpage that explains that dispels the myth.

Maybe it's just the angle, but that looks like it's a really big dolphin compared to that surfer.

I don't surf, but I visit the beach alot. The place in FL I used to go to didn't see many dolphins or sharks. I remember once when I was out past the breakers, just floating on my back and having a lovely relaxing time, and my mom started yelling at me to come in. So I swam in, and everyone was like "There's a shark out there!" Couple minutes later, everyone realizes it's just a group of dolphins. I was mad because I liked floating out there on my back, but I didn't feel like swimming back out there, so I just went inside.

That's a big dolphin..

I'm an ex-floridian and used to hit the beaches every weekend that it wasn't raining (liquid sunshine in florida). Seen plenty of sharks, they usually hang around the sand bars, and sometimes slip between them as the tide rises to do whatever it is they want to do. St. George Island was the usual hangout, quiet, nice white beaches, not heavily travelled. (Floridian's secret beach)

Shockingly enough, last time I was there (just visiting the beaches last year ), I wandered out to the sand bar (it was low tide, so I never got below my waist in water). As I get up to the bar, I see this huge (at least 7 foot) hammerhead come gliding over the sandbar towards me. (VERY clear in the shallow water, it's head was quite obviously shaped). I pulled a jesus move and ran back on water to shore. The moment I jerked in the water though, he/she jerked as well and took off away from me. Probably didn't realize I was there, and was probably as startled to sense me as I was to see it.

Some of the overhead shots I've seen from choppers/planes that patrol the shores are pretty darn scary.. Numerous sharks within only a few hundred feet of shore just doing their sharky business.
