heh, guys, well. i thought id update you guys about this now rather than never.

The car started making a horrible rattling sound, as if something kept hitting itself against the top of the engine bay (the sound was really loud and clearly came from the top side of the block when i had popped the hood). The car literally sounded like a truck's engine and basically i lost all my power above 3.5k rpm and even the power delivery reaching that was very jittery and jerky. Basically i parked it and had it towed to my mechanic who got back to me and told me the timing chain was damaged, the left chain tensioner was broken, a chain alignment rod was broken and a cam sprocket was broken. Mind you i have only driven the car twice (because of insurance that i needed to sort out), and such extensive damage coming out of nowhere left me quite shocked. Obviously the dealer ripped me off pretty bad (or maybe he just didnt have a clue), but when i test drove the thing there was absolutely no sign of any faults in the engine, infact the mechanic test drove it himself and said there werent any problems that he could feel. (Is it normal to get a mechanic to open up the engine bay to check it out before buying a car? I do not know and i didnt have this done, but if i am able to do that, for future reference i definately will).

Anyways, im left with a thousand dollar repair bill on it now, and the car should be ready on tuesday once everything is sorted out. Is it normal for something like this to happen without any forewarning at all? Or do you guys think there is something else in the car that i should have thoroughly checked out that may have caused such a near terminal failure (this happened at about 40km/h, imagine if it happened on a highway doing 120km/h...).

I've barely driven the car at all (i think 70 km in total in 2 outings and ive had it for a 3 weeks. the problem happened in week 2 so, eh not a long time at all) and hope everything gets sorted out on tuesday and that i wont be having any big problems after this because i really can't afford the car if things like this keep happening on a regular basis. Given the car has 200K on it already, im hoping this is just one of those big overhauls that need to be done on high milage and then i wont have to do anything too major for it for a while. I'll keep you guys updated (if i get time to, ive been really busy at the same time but ill try my best).

If your mechanic friend took it for a drive and said it sounded good I'm sure it was. Its very possible that its failure is purely coincidentel and nobodys fault. Older cars will break just from fatigue and use. I had the same thing happen on my first car(1969 Datsun 510). I paid for the repairs and went on to enjoy the car for a long time. If you have the finacial resources, it might be a good time to get the rest of the car inspected thoroughly. Just a thought.

Hmmm....timing chains and/or belts....the bane of many a car owner! LOL....I am surprised that your mechanic friend that looked at it before you bought it didnt make that one of the first things he looked at......It would have been something I would have looked at......

I thought you would have to take quite a few pieces off the front of the engine to get to the timing chain?

mclarensmps, thank god the tinming chain itself didn't break or it probably would have done quite some damage to the vavle train. Hope it all works out for you.

I meant I would have made a mechanic or another expert look at that....both of the POS cars I bought when i was in the states needed to new timing belts/tensioner pulleys so I am personally paranoid about that. If the mechanic had to take quite a few pieces off and I had the time/money to save me future headache then so be it.........actually now I try to buy my used vehicles direct from a dealership.....any dealer will do just not a non-sponsored used car dealer....those are the ones that run scams on you..........

aye guys, i did not know that i was allowed to have the engine bay opened up and such, hence i did not tell the guy to do it for me (though he should have advised me that he could and should...), however, i will be finding out more details on tuesday re. what happened. I did get the timing chain replaced regardless, and i have a feeling i will have to replace the clutch as well soon. But i will have to take things one at a time.

Yeah well if they let you test drive it alone then how do they know you opened it up? At least over here they sometimes will let you test drive the car for 24hours before you bring it back.....I mean they get your insurance information, drivers license number. If you were to try to do anything wrong or get in an accident it would only hurt yourself so it isnt worth it to try anything to crazy...and they have no problem taking the risk because the laws are on their side anyway.....

Wow, the 24 hour test drive is pretty nice, can't really do much better then that.

I said what I did about the timing chain/belt because at least from my experience with older used car dealers is that they don't let you take cars too far away from their dealership. You have a good point with checking things like that, even if it does cost you money, it will save a lot in the future and all the headache.

Real sorry this happened to you Mclaren. It really takes the wind out of your sails. I don't know if the dealer knew about this problem but I think the previous owner did. That's probably why they sold the car. The motor in your car is supposed to be a jewel of an engine. I hope it gets fixed right and runs for a long time. I don't suppose the dealer you bought it from has offered to pay for some of the repairs? Sometimes if you push the issue real hard they'll cave in. Happened with my girlfriend's Isuzu.

I am reminded of how good a BMW is every time I drive someone else's car. Instantly, I notice the other cars' poor seats, weak brakes, sloppy tranny, and ratty motor.

But it is an older car and I have to resign myself that repairs will be necessary. I figure $2000 a year in service and repairs is still cheaper than $4000 a year in payments.

Hey guys, time for an update.

Unfortunately, today the bomb was dropped on me. The mechanic pretty much replaced everything he could in the valvetrain but didnt find the source of the problem. We finally took it to BMW (too little too late), and had it checked out there. Basically the engine has been totalled, the cylinders are gone, the heads and bore have warped slightly and are not really repairable.

Basically they tell me that the engine cannot be fixed and the only solution is to have the engine replaced. So yeah, basically im now in the market for a '92 318 Motor :\. I have no idea on how to go about searching for one, or how much it is going to cost. I feel pretty miserable for having bought a lemon, but i didnt know better at the time so now im stuck with it. Anyways, im not gonna lose faith and will try to get this thing fixed if it is reasonable enough to do so. Been a really hard day for me. But thought i would share it with you guys.

Damn Sorry to hear that Duff. Thats major bollocks..
On the bright side, you can get something better than a 1.8 liter 4 cyl.. *nudge nudge 2.5 or 2.8* If you're going to dish out major cash for an engine, why not get something better.

Damn dude, I went through this whole thread, and that is absolutely terrible. You need to contact the dealership you bought it from and tell them what happened. You did not agree to purchase a car with a ruined engine and see what they can do to help you out.
This is such a terrible thing to happen, I cannot even imagine what it's like...you finally get your car and it just takes the biggest dump on you. Keep us posted and let us know if we can do anything to help.

What a kick in the gut.

I would really go after the dealer who sold you the car to see if he can do something for you. If he won't, see what your options are legally. Either the dealer or the previous owner must have known the engine was about to $hit the bed.

In the US we have the BMW Car Club of America. They're really a good bunch of guys. I'm sure you have a similar organization in Canada. I would email someone in your local chapter for honest, knowledgeable advice.

Thanks for the support guys, seeing that it is a weekend, Im using it to get some contacts that I will phone up come monday. The dealer is being anal about the whole thing and said that had I bought a warranty he may have been able to do something about it.

The thing is when i bought the car, I read the warranty paper and it only covered 800 dollars worth of repairs (including labour) and didnt cover half the engine components that could have been shot, hence i didnt go for it.

The guy is being totally uncooperative, but I have proof the car was only driven 150ish km and have the towing details of the car. I also have written bills and notes by both of the mechanics stating what the various problems with the cars have been.

Apparantly legally I am protected for 30 days over being sold a lemon (a colleague of mine tells me) and i'm trying to find which government agency i am to contact in order to follow this up. It has been 2 months since i bought the car, but all the papers indicate that the car died before the 30 day period so I do have a strong case on my side.

Once I have a better idea of what my rights are, i will take it from there. I am also trying to find some numbers of a BMW car club or some such from where i may be able to get some advice on what to do. I hope things work out for the better, thanks again for the support, and I will keep you guys updated!

Hey, sorry for the delay in updates, I was busy wrapped up in final projects and exams, all that is finally taken care of.

Unfortunately, I got some pretty grim news for christmas, the ministry of transportation is going to take 6 to 8 months to process my case and then give me a response as to what course of action they will have me take. In the meantime i've been looking for a decent engine to put in because i really need a car to drive to school during the winter as the busses get severely delayed specially since there is some construction going on on my school route. I dont want to exceed a budget of about 1.5 to 1.7G because i want to factor in some cash to set aside for labour costs for the installation process.

I probably won't be able to afford this for atleast another month or two, but i figure i can use this time to find exactly what engine i want, and find the right person to do the transplant for me. If you guys have any suggestions as to where i can get some decent deals for engines, and what i should be looking out for when choosing one, please feel free to let me know, because i am quite clueless as to how to go about this.

Well, here's the latest. I found an engine from a '96 model with 160 kliks on it. Its costing me 2.5 canadian including taxes and labour and the car should be ready by the end of next week. This has been pretty much the most retarted and expensive experience i've been through in my entire life...

Anyways, hopefully, from now on things will be much better, its the new year and im just looking forward to things looking better!!!

Well guys, yesterday i finally got my car back! It cost me an arm and a leg but it got an engine transplant from a '97 318. The guy was quite critical of my mechanic and said the reason for the previous engine's seisure was an oil seal breakage. The problem was that when it happened none of the lights in the car identified it and soon after the engine gave in.

Now that its all done, im ready for a new beginning and hope that nothings gonna go wrong again!

Congrats. You've got more resiliance than a lot of people to have stuck it out. Hopefully the car runs trouble free for a long time to come.

Don't give up on trying to re-coup some of your costs legally. It may take a while but keep on it.
