Ok, not really a party...

I painted my car over spring break and tried to document the process. Of course, when big changes started happening I got busy and forgot to take pics. Oh well.

I'm super happy with it. It's not at all perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better than it was before (close ups of the old paint in this thread). The biggest disappointment is that a couple pieces of trim are too broken to go back on, and one of those flew away on the interstate.

Before I started:

Someone had keyed this car. It was at least 4 years ago because it was before my dad bought it:

She's nakey:

Begin day two:

Here I am, sanding away:

Begin day three:

I sure showed that scratch who's boss:

I love taking things apart:

It's things like this that killed my battery.... Three times (Drying everything out after wet sanding):

Home-made paint booth:

Supposed to keep the dust out of the air in here. Didn't work as well as we'd hoped:

Ready to be unwrapped:

My dad and I are putting her back together:

A closeup of the new paint:

It started storming, so I'll take some more pictures of the final product when the weather is less nasty.

Looks nice, I'd love to see more pix. I'm curious about the paint gun/compressor you used. Was it a conventional air driven gun & compressor or did you use an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) paint sprayer rig?

I'm also curious as to what kind/brand of paint you used - polyurethane? single or base/clear? I'm working on a project car right now and trying to decide if I want to paint it myself or pay someone to do it....

The paint is a Dupont brand. Not sure exactly what kind everything was because it's all at my dad's house, so I can't really check right now. I think it was urethane. We did etching primer on the bare metal, then a filler primer on all of the outside (not on the door jambs or inside of trunk or hood), then a coat of sealer, two coats of base, two coats of clear.
The etching primer came in a spray can, the filler primer had to be mixed 4:1 with a catalyst, the sealer was ready to spray, basecoat was 1:1 with reducer, and clear was 4:1 with a catalyst.

Hope some of that helps.

It's alot of work to paint it yourself, but it's also alot cheaper than paying someone else. And if you love the car, you don't mind the work too much. In my case, it was totally worth it to do it myself.

Justin,

I am really impressed! I would be way to scared and not nearly confident enough to tackle painting my car myself. Good job! I can't wait to see more "after" pictures.

By the way, I like your name! [thumb]

Haha, likewise. [thumb]

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

I started working on it Friday evening last week, and I finished yesterday, so it took about 8 days of doing nothing else from about 10 to 6. The latter days I worked until around 9 or 10. I guess it was around 70 hours total.

It's supposed to be sunny and warm tomorrow, so I can hopefully take some more pics tomorrow. This is one of those colors that looks like a completely different shade depending on how much light it hitting it.

Looks great, you and your father did an excellent job. Now all you have to do is put some advertising in your window and open your own paint studio.

Way to go!! I agree it will be something you look back on and remember the project with your dad. Those are great times to be had. I don't know you, but I am proud of the time and effort you put forth to fix your car up. You can truly call it your own. Looks great and looking forward to more pics....
